About the Artist

The work of glass artist Kathleen Eggert is inspired by the costume, rituals, dance and stories of traditional cultures. A self-taught artist, she has been developing her own techniques for firing enamels on glass for over 20 years. Her work has been widely exhibited internationally and is included in the collection of the Corning Museum of glass.

About the Work

The sculptures are sandblast carved from half-inch or thicker plate glass panels, and layers of powdered enamels are applied in multiple firings to achieve luminous color of great depth. Individual pieces may also include fired gold or applied metal leaf and sandblast etching. Faceless and spirit-like, the figures often evoke feelings of spirituality or mysticism. Fabricated masks of sterling silver can be removed and worn, allowing the objects to be "shared" with the figure.

Being self-taught, I have had the freedom to develop my work both technically and esthetically according to my own vision, reflecting my interest in the costume, ritual and myth of traditional cultures.

The figures themselves are faceless and spirit-like. While not intentionally specific to any religious or cultural tradition, they do often evoke strong feelings of spirituality or mysticism. Masks and ornaments add to the context of each piece, and by being wearable, allow the wearer to “share” these objects with the figures.
