Monotype is a print process in which a single print is made rather than an edition as in other forms of printmaking.

Monotypes are made by painting oil paint or printing ink on a plate made of plexiglas, metal or wood. Paper is placed on the plate and the image is transferred by running plate and paper thru an etching press or by hand-rubbing. The process can be repeated many times until the artist feels the print is finished, using the same piece of paper.

If enough paint remains on the plate a second print may be made (ghost image) which will contain the original image but will not be identical. The notation 1/1 indicates a monotype.
